Butterfly Cards & Gifts began in a simple, personal way — with handmade cards.

I’ve always loved creating special, meaningful cards for birthdays and milestones, but there were never enough occasions in my own family to make them all. So I started making them for others. At the time, the business was just going to be cards. Then, with a gentle nudge from my husband, it grew into something more. He suggested I include some of the bags and handmade items I was already creating, and from there, it slowly and naturally expanded.

Around that same time, I was navigating changes in my health that meant a traditional job was no longer the right fit for me. Building this little business became a way to stay independent, creative, and connected to something meaningful. I don’t share that as a story for sympathy, but as part of the truth behind why this work matters so much to me.

Today, the business has grown into three creative arms:

• Sewn items designed for everyday use

• Cross stitch supplies, patterns, and finished keepsakes

• Handmade cards and paper pieces

While cards were where it all began, the heart of the business is now in creating thoughtful, practical items that make everyday life a little easier.

Most of the designs you’ll find here started as something I needed myself, or something I created to solve a real problem for someone close to me.

I made the Overbook Pouch because I was forever grabbing my journal and realising I didn’t have the right pen with me. I wanted something lightweight, durable, and simple that kept everything together.

A waterproof pouch came from a family friend who needed something small and practical for her granddaughter’s school bag after getting braces and needing dental supplies on hand at all times.

The essentials pouches began because I was tired of band-aids, Panadol, and everyday items floating loose in my bag. When my daughter asked for a bigger version for her own things, that idea grew into a whole range of shapes and sizes.

Everything I make is created with intention. Not to follow trends, and not to produce things just for the sake of it, but to make items that are useful, personal, and thoughtfully designed.

I’ve been cross stitching for over 30 years, sewing for more than a decade, and making cards for several years. Over time, what began as a personal creative outlet has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of. Building this business has been one of the hardest and most rewarding things I’ve done, and I still feel grateful every time something I’ve made becomes part of someone else’s everyday life.

Most pieces on the website are ready-made in small batches, but I’m always happy to talk about making customisations or working out how I can make your life a little easier.

At its heart, this business is about creating from real life. Ideas start with a need, a frustration, or a small moment of “there has to be a better way,” and they grow into something practical, useful, and hopefully a little bit special.
